Memoir or Resource?
When I started writing Becoming an Indie Author, I didn’t set out to portray myself as an expert in either writing a book or self-publishing. Becoming an Indie Author was just meant to be an honest and vulnerable account of my quest to write and publish my family stories. Whilst I have written and self-published four books, there is still so much to learn.
But as the manuscript developed, I wondered whether I did in fact have something to offer in the way of advice to others, particularly those at the beginning of their author journey or for those considering self-publishing. So I added key takeaways at the end of each chapter, including some practical tips, small insights and a few pitfalls to avoid.
So now my book has somewhat of an identity crisis. It has become two things at once: a personal story and a practical guide. Perhaps that is what it needed to be.
This book isn’t about having all the answers. It is about documenting the process including the self-doubt, the mistakes and the small wins along the way.
In many ways, I primarily wrote this book for me, as a record of everything I have achieved since I first decided that I might be able to write a book back in 2019. And to help me find the courage to continue writing and publishing my work. But if it helps someone else along the way, that would mean a lot.
